UW Word Exchange

It was interesting seeing the different styles of letter people found all across campus, when some may be the regular form or common style of alphabets, others really make me wonder where and how they were found. Similar to that of Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Untitled (Free) where people come together to participate in art and that the art work itself is the interaction of people, and that of Olafur Eliasson’s The Weather Project where people have to collaborate with each other to see the difference. Having seen their work, it is interesting how the word exchange is conducted and it makes me reflect on how people interact with each other both as friends or as strangers. While I was not the one conducting the actual word exchange, I did participate in one of them, and it was interesting hearing the reasons or stories behind why people came up with the words they provided.

I was also interested in hearing what people had to say when they are deciding what word they want to choose. Personally, I gave the word “Taiwan”, as it is the name of my country and it represents who I am as a person and my identity in the community. Not only does it stand for who I am, but it also represents the community I’m in, the difference we have with others, and is a part of the diverse environment here at the UW. I took the word “silhouette” because it also reflects on the human body and can, in a sense, be a

representation of who we are and how we are alike or different from one another.
